DIY: Aromatherapy Jewelry for Your dōTERRA Essential Oils

Aromatherapy jewelry is a great way to experience the power of aromatherapy throughout your day. What’s even better is that you can easily make your own aromatherapy jewelry right at home. There is no need to be a crafty person—this DIY project is fun and easy for everyone to do. So go grab some friends (and of course your essential oils) and get together to have a fun girls night making homemade jewelry.
But first, what is aromatherapy jewelry? The jewelry itself is made out of natural clay that can absorb essential oils (such as terra-cotta). You can also find aromatherapy jewelry that is made out of glass or wood . You can make any type of jewelry you desire: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, beads,  etc. Once the clay is sculpted and dried, you can add the essential oil or blend of your choice to the jewelry. The oil absorbs into the clay and allows you to smell and experience the power of essential oil aromatherapy throughout your day. It’s like your own personal diffuser that goes wherever you do!
Here is a tutorial on how to make necklace pendants, but you can use this same technique to make car air fresheners, Christmas ornaments, key chains, and more. They make wonderful presents as well.
Editor’s tip: Store your scented jewelry when it is not being worn in your linen closet of dresser drawers to keep fabrics smelling great.
Materials:

  • Terra-cotta clay (you can find terra-cotta clay that you can bake in your oven or air dry at most large craft stores)
  • Sand paper
  • Stamps (small—no more than 1 inch in diameter)
  • Shish kabob stick (or toothpick)
  • String
  • 1-1.25 round cut-out object (can use caps left over from hair products, bottle caps, cookie cutter, etc.)
  • Rolling pin (or pen/pencil will work)
  • Scissors
  • Aluminum foil
  • Wax paper
Directions:
1. Grab a handful of terra-cotta clay and rub in palms of hands until it’s soft and pliable.
2. Place a piece of wax paper on the table.
3. Use the rolling pin to roll out the clay until it’s 1/8 inch thick.
4. Take your round object for cutting out circles and press firmly into the clay to make the pendant.
5. Remove the excess clay from the cut out pendants. Take each pendant and stamp the design into clay.
6. Once you have stamped the pendants, take your Shish kabob stick (or toothpick) and make a hole in the pendant. Make sure the hole is big enough to fit two strands of string into.
7. With the left over clay, make a few small round beads and put a medium to large size hole in the center of it.
8. Once all the pendants have holes, place them on a cookie sheet covered in aluminum foil and bake or air dray according to the specifications provided with your clay.
9. If baking in the oven, be careful to not overbake. They may seem bendable as soon as you take them out of the oven, but they will harden once they cool completely.
10. Once cool, use sandpaper to lightly smooth away any rough edges. It will temporarily change the color of the clay, but it will return to normal once essential oils are applied.
11. Take your string and cut it to your desired length. You might want to add 4-5 extra inches just to be safe. You can always cut the string shorter later on.
12. Take your pendant and put both ends of your string through the hole. Pull the ends through and put them through the loop. Pull tight. This will help your pendant lay flat on your chest.
13. If you want a shorter necklace that can easily be taken on and off, follow steps 14-15. If not, just tie the two strings together.
14. On one end of the necklace tie a knot a couple inches down. Place a bead on next and then tie a knot on top of the bead so the bead is securely in place. On the other end of necklace, tie a loop that is large enough for the bead to fit through. Cut off any extra string. To take your necklace on and off, simply put the bead in the hole that will act as a clasp.
15. Your necklace pendant is done! Now let’s add the aromatherapy element to it.
16. Put 1 drop of your preferred essential oil onto the pendant. Rub the oil around.
That’s it! Your necklace is ready to wear so you can enjoy mood-enhancing essential oils throughout the day! If the scent begins to fade, you can add another drop to the pendant. Remember that a little essential oil goes a long way. 1 drop is plenty.

Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli Essential Oil

Used for centuries in perfumes and fragrances, Patchouli is one of the more aromatic essential oils. Patchouli oil has an easily recognizable rich musky-sweet fragrance and is used widely in the perfume industry.
Patchouli is a species from the genus Pogostemon a bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching two or three feet in height and bearing small pale-pink or white flowers. The plant is native to the tropical regions of Asia but is now extensively cultivated in China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, West Africa and Vietnam.
During the 18th and 19th century silk traders from China traveling to the Middle East packed their silk cloth with dried patchouli leaves to prevent moths from laying their eggs on the cloth. Many historians speculate that this association with opulent eastern goods is why patchouli was considered by Europeans of that era to be a luxurious scent. It is said that patchouli was used in the linen chests of Queen Victoria in this way. Studies today suggest that patchouli essential oil may serve as an all-purpose insect repellent.
Patchouli essential oil is known to have a grounding, balancing effect on the emotions while providing excellent mood support. Patchouli is also widely used for wounds and tissue repair, as well as in skin care preparations for these same properties.
Product Tips:
  • To make your own wrinkle cream, add 10 drops of Patchouli, Myrrh, and Geranium to an unscented body lotion or massage oil.
  • For oily skin and hair add a few drops of Patchouli essential oil to your shampoo or facial cream.
  • Diffuse for a calming, soothing effect.
  • Add a few drops to your pets shampoo for a deodorizing effect.
The strong sweet, spicy and musky aroma of this "essential oil" keeps away body odor. But it should be used in dilution as sometimes the aroma of Patchouli Oil might feel too strong to bear.

Increase Your Awareness with Wintergreen Essential Oil

Wintergreen is most commonly known as a sweet and minty flavoring agent in chewing gum, toothpaste, and yes, even root beer! However, Wintergreen essential oil has even more to offer therapeutically.
Wintergreen essential oil has a very powerful aroma, and when used aromatically can help influence, elevate, open, and increase awareness in your sensory system.
Wintergreen essential oil can also act as a great soothing and comforting agent for aches and pains, which is why it’s the main essential oil in dōTERRA’s Deep Blue Soothing Blend. Wintergreen has also traditionally been used for a variety of issues including skin conditions, infections, fevers, gallstones, and much more.
Tips from dōTERRA:
  • If applying to skin, make sure to test on a small area of skin first for skin sensitivity. If sensitivity occurs, dilute with fractionated coconut oil.
  • Wintergreen has a warming effect when applied to skin as is excellent to use in a massage to relieve sore muscles. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly.
  • For a soothing bath, add 3-5 drops of Wintergreen essential oil to warm bath water.
  • Wintergreen essential oil is not recommended to take internally and should be stored out of reach from children.
